Kyle swore inwardly.

Fuck. Fuck.

She was crying. Staring down into the horse's water trough as if it were her only consolation, tears streaming down her cheeks.

And he'd been the one to make her do it.

Kyle had been watching her all day. She'd wedged her way into the ranch hands' daily activities as she'd tried to force her body to remember how to do them. At first, he'd been slightly irritated that she'd thrown the boys off schedule, but he'd stopped short of chastising her upon seeing her wide smiles as she finished her tasks.

She'd milked cows with cramping fingers and come out grinning like a loon. She shoveled chicken and cow shit and came out dirty and laughing. She'd even had the presence of mind to let Skye come to her in the pen and not the other way around.

She was learning.

And the thought made him nervous. If Andrea's performance on the ranch improved, she'd almost certainly stay – and complicate his life. He could barely stand to be around her for being drawn to her creamy, white skin and deep green eyes. When he was alone, all he could think of was touching her -kissing her, and making her his.

They were dangerous thoughts – even more so when he contemplated what they would mean if she stayed. And so, in a slight panic, he'd goaded her.

He'd hardly expected this, though. The woman had all but fallen to pieces before him, and he'd be damned if those tears were fake. Andrea's chest hitched as if her sobs came from her very soul, and to think he'd caused them pained him.

What was he doing? Was he really this much of an asshole?

This morning Shirley had smiled and laughed with her daughter as they'd made breakfast together. There hadn't been a tear in sight, and as he'd watched them together, he'd known that perhaps the healing had begun.

Yet here he was, trying to save his own skin by calling Andrea out on the actions that had cleaved her and her parents apart. If he had ever doubted whether or not she felt badly for how she'd left the ranch, now he knew.

He'd only had to make her cry to find out.

Kyle Hammond, you callous son of a bitch.

Hesitantly, the tall man crouched beside Andrea, placing a large hand on her shoulder. When he spoke, his voice was gruff.

“Hey...” He managed, attempting to clear his throat. “Andrea, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have...I didn't mean to-” He was cut off when she threw herself into his arms, sobbing against his chest.

Kyle's first impulse was to hold her close – to protect her from all she feared and never let her go. And so, he gathered her to him, letting her expend her grief on his soiled work shirt as her slender form shook in his arms.

His heart ached for her.

Just two weeks ago, he'd wondered what the hell a high-riding city girl would return to the country for and now he knew why. The country had, apparently, never left her.
